However, although both companies’ comics are in a significant moment in terms of their popularity, these are not the only ones with great stories to tell, that is why this time we are going to focus on some of the best comics you can read that are not from MARVEL or DC.

Is it worth it to find comics outside of MARVEL and DC?

It is true that once we enter the wondrous and complex universe of Marvel or DC comics, it is difficult to stop reading their stories due to how entertaining they can be. Still, the reality is that the comics of other producers (and even independent authors) can be as good as either of the two big companies; here are some examples.

1) Invincible

Unlike the vast majority of comics, the invincible comic is quite cruel and twisted, not from a pessimistic or morbid point of view (it is pretty colorful), but from a surprisingly realistic one. It is a comic of heroes, yes, but forget about the clichés that we usually see in many of the most famous comics; Invincible is not afraid to go out of the mold and tell us a story of superheroes in a unique way. If you’re still not convinced, it might help to know that the comic tells one of the best superhero stories ever created for many people and critics, so if you are a fan of the genre, you should do yourself a favor and read Invincible.

2) Maus

Leaving the superhero theme aside, in this third place is a comic that has even managed to win a Pulitzer Prize. This comic has the particularity that its own author’s experiences are reflected in the cartoons. He decides to tell the story of his father, a Jew who lived first-hand the catastrophes of the Nazi genocide during the Second World War. In the pages, we see how instead of human beings, the characters in the story are represented in the form of anthropomorphic animals; Jews are mice, Germans are cats, dogs are Americans, and so on.

It is indeed a type of comic quite different from the one that comic lovers usually read, so it is not for everyone; however, it’s a great story overall, and that is a good enough reason to read it.

3) Harrow County

If you are looking for something to give you goosebumps, then Harrow County is a perfect option. Published by Dark Horse, this horror comic continues to be praised today for how easily it manages to achieve its goal: to quickly scare and catch the reader’s attention in an exciting plot where mysteries keep us expectant at all times.

The plot revolves around Emmy, a seventeen-year-old young girl who suspects ghosts and other creatures living in the forest. Still, once she turns 18, she realizes that her suspicions are more than just that, these supernatural beings are genuine, and as things happen, she’ll realize they have a deep connection with her.

4) Sin City

You may not have read it, but if you’re a comic book lover, you’ve likely heard about it at some point. By none other than legendary Batman and Daredevil writer Frank Miller, Sin City has attracted attention since its release. Sin City has many peculiarities, from the black and white original drawing style with very marked contrasts to the mature way that the story is told. However, the way that this comic innovates, and its general quality in every single issue, has made it a full-fledged classic, regardless of whether you are a fan of comics or not.  Sin City is a masterpiece that can make you love the story after a short time reading it.

5) Polar

Comics with good stories are many, but comics as polar… Well, there are not so many. Nevertheless, the 2012 webcomic shines for how it manages to tell an interesting story without dialogue. Instead, it is precisely the idea of telling the story solely through visual elements that initially call the reader’s attention. Plus, both for this reason and for the drawing style, many describe the work as minimalist.

The story begins when Black Kaiser, a retired hitman who is quietly in his cabin when a group of assassins tries to kill him. This is how we see that it is an organization that wants to end Black Kaiser, but this will make things difficult for them. A simple plot, but an effective one.

It is important to mention that, although it did not initially have dialogues, several of these were added when Dark Horse published the story in physical format; however, if you wish, you could read the version of the webcomic without dialogue.

6) Spawn

It is challenging to create a symbolic character within the theme of characters with superpowers. After all, it seems that while MARVEL and DC exist, almost everyone other superhero-related comic goes to a less critical spot. However, Spawn has made a name for itself in the industry. The success of the comic has been so big that the story has also been taken to other media, such as video games or even anime. So, if you want to know a universe full of exciting characters, Spawn is undoubtedly one of the best options, especially if you are a fan of the genre and are looking for something new that also feels familiar.

We may not be in the golden age of comics. Still, it is undeniable that they have taken on much more relevance than we could expect a few decades ago.  That is why there are a large number of comics from different publishers or even authors freelancing worth reading, so if you’re looking for something to read outside of MARVEL and DC, this is your time to try something new.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
