Some of the Most Emotional Video Game Endings in History

A majority of video games out there are good enough to enjoy, but only a select few remain in players’ memories forever. These games are so immersive and extraordinary that they drive players even to the point of tears—the list below features some of the most emotional endings in video games that come to mind. There are many spoilers for each game listed, so make sure you’ve ended them before reading.

The Most Emotional Video Game Endings

Telltale’s The Walking Dead

The whole game was one filled with sorrow and loss, but the end hit especially hard. While Lee was the only playable character throughout the game, players also get to play as Clementine for only a few minutes. During these few minutes, players only have to make one major choice, and it is by far the most challenging and heartbreaking of all. Lee is a bit and requests that Clementine shoot him to prevent him from turning into a walker. Players can either follow Lee’s wish or decide to leave him as he is to turn. Either way, the ending has driven many to tears.

Ghost of Tsushima

Ghost of Tsushima may look beautiful and cool, but behind all of this is one of the most heartbreaking stories to date. Jin Sakai, the main character, has to abandon every one of his morals to save his home. While he ultimately accomplishes his goal of defeating the Mongol leader, he does so at the sacrifice of his honor and the respect of his uncle, who was his father-figure as well. At the end of the game, Jin has to face off against his uncle in a devastatingly emotional fight. Players get to choose if they kill Lord Shimura or spare him, and either way, the entire game and the ending are pretty emotional.

Red Dead Redemption 2

Red Dead Redemption 2 was the story of Arthur Morgan, a cowboy who had done many wrong deeds throughout his life. While learning halfway through the game that he has TB, Arthur decides to turn his life around and do good before he dies. During his last days, Arthur is betrayed by the people he trusted most and watches many he loved most die. At the very end, the players themselves have to watch Arthur die of his sickness. There are two endings, both resulting in the same outcome for Arthur, and both are very emotional.

The Last of Us

The initial part of The Last of Us was also one filled with heart-wrenching moments from start to finish. The ending was a very emotional one too. While not as sad as the others mentioned thus far, it was the most thought-provoking. After an entire journey across the country with Ellie, Joel becomes quite fond of her. At the end of their story, Joel realizes that Ellie will have to die for the vaccine to be made. Deciding that he’s not letting yet another daughter-figure die, Joel decides to shoot up the Firefly base and take Ellie with him, sacrificing all of humanity to protect the child he loves and cares for.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
