Most Anticipated Games of 2023
2022 wasn’t necessarily the best year for video game enthusiasts. The video game industry had a slow-paced start last year but somehow managed to put out some banger titles along the way. Elden Ring, God of War: Ragnarök, and the newest AAA releases like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II and Sonic Frontiers helped make last year a redeemable one. The independent and sleeper hits revolutionizing the gaming industry, such as Cult of the Lamb and Stray, also stood out this year.
Now that 2022 has ended, all eyes are on the upcoming titles planned for this year. Each platform, including Switch, Xbox, PlayStation, and PC, has something special planned for the coming year. So, here are some of the most anticipated games to look forward to in 2023.
1. Starfield
One of the most anticipated video games set to be released in 2023, “Starfield,” is the brand-new RPG from Bethesda Game Studios.
It’s the studio’s first original intellectual property in 25 years and Fallout 4 and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim’s promising successor. Bethesda appears to be prepared to show once again why they are one of the top RPG studios with Starfield, which seems to be a large setting demanding to be explored. Starfield has elevated to one of the most coveted Xbox Series X games among gamers due to its promise of letting us choose our course through the solar system into other galaxies.
Starfield was set to be released on November 11, 2022, but it was put off until 2023, just before Xbox & Bethesda’s Summer Games Showcase in May 2022. When questioned why the release date of Starfield had been postponed, Developer Bethesda Studios stated that it has “great goals” for the game and wishes for people to experience the finest, most polished version. As a result, the first half of 2023 has now been set as the release window for Starfield’s release, according to Microsoft Game Studios.
2. Final Fantasy XVI
The 35th anniversary of the Final Fantasy series and “Final Fantasy XVI”, the most recent mainline entry of the series, are both coming up in 2023. With this announcement, both hardcore Final Fantasy fans and curious JRPG lovers eagerly await Final Fantasy XVI since it will be the first mainline Final Fantasy game to be released in seven years.
Final Fantasy XVI’s main storyline will follow Clive Rosfield during his youth: his 20s and 30s. In addition, the Dominants and their Eikons will receive a lot of attention according to the title’s setting. Overall, the game appears to have a distinct dark fantasy atmosphere and doesn’t look like earlier Final Fantasy games.
This PlayStation exclusive was first announced at Sony’s PlayStation 5 event on September 16, 2020. Square Enix will bring new life into the JRPG genre with this title. Final Fantasy XVI is scheduled to be released in the upcoming year with 4K visuals, a fluid frame rate, and many other next-gen features somewhere around the middle of 2023.
3. Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
Probably the most eagerly awaited Nintendo Switch title in recent gaming history is Breath of the Wild 2, AKA “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom”, which is set to be released on May 12, 2023, exclusively on the Nintendo Switch.
The original Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is generally regarded as one of the best video games, which makes the new Zelda title one of the hottest announcements within the gaming community. This release, without a doubt, will be a fantastic launch for the Nintendo Switch.
The official title announcement for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom happened during the Nintendo Direct presentation in September 2022, after the game’s initial tease in 2019. Within this teased new gameplay, Link has returned with new tools and capabilities that he’ll need to conquer a variety of brand-new dungeons.
4. Hogwarts Legacy
Due to a gameplay leak in 2019, “Hogwarts Legacy” has been a hot topic for years, even before it was revealed. However, the game was unveiled in September 2020 and is set to be released on February 10, 2023.
Hogwarts Legacy is the biggest and most anticipated Wizarding World RPG to be released in a long time. With this announcement, Harry Potter fans and RPG players eagerly await to explore the ins and outs of the legendary Wizarding School of Hogwarts.
The game, which will let players enter the Harry Potter fantasy world as a wizard, is set in the 1800s and takes place within the Harry Potter universe. That is more than a century before Grindelwald and nearly 200 years before Harry Potter was born. Players will get to roleplay their very own character, freely exploring the mystical and magical corridors of Hogwarts and the surrounding world.
5. Street Fighter 6
The next big title in the Street Fighter franchise from Capcom has been announced and is set to be released this year. Fortunately, it appears to be all fans could have hoped for from a next-generation Street Fighter installment. It feels like the first time Street Fighter has had a defined direction since Street Fighter IV, with a respectable initial lineup, control options for both new and seasoned players, and some great ’90s hip-hop visual style.
According to the available information, this new installment of the series will inherit all of its predecessors’ core game elements and will include many new features, such as new game modes, new characters, new mechanics, and a simplified control system for beginners. In addition, the latest installment in this series won’t be a console exclusive like Street Fighter 5 was. The parallel release of Street Fighter 6 on PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC is fantastic news for Xbox players who didn’t get to play the previous installment.
Street Fighter 6 doesn’t have a fixed release date yet, but Capcom has provided a general timeline. According to its developer, Street Fighter 6 will probably be released in the summer of 2023. This was announced during Sony’s State of Play event in June 2022.
