Infinity War vs. Endgame. Which is better?

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is one of the biggest success stories of the film industry in the last thirteen years or so, and for a good reason, as they are probably the biggest film franchise in the world right now. Thanks to them and how they have created a shared cinematic universe, superhero movies are more incredible than ever, and superheroes have become bigger than they ever were before.

In that regard, the overarching plot built around the Marvel Cinematic Universe was the Infinity Stones and the battle against Thanos, who was eager to change the universe in his image. It was an amazing journey that found its logical conclusion on the films Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, with many different plot threads finally being concluded and starting the new ones for the upcoming MCU phases.

So there is a lot of debate about which one of these films was the best, and that is something worth considering as they are very different films. They both offer other things, but it is still an entertaining discussion to have, and today we will do just that.

Infinity War vs. Endgame. Which is better?

Context matters.

While both films are Avengers movies and part of the MCU, the reality is that they are very different movies in terms of what they want to achieve and the way they end, which is something worth taking into account. You cannot compare a movie that establishes something with a movie that focuses on concluding something. It makes a huge difference.

In that regard, Avengers: Infinity War is more about setting up the conflict with Thanos, his goals, and the way he does things, plus establishing the stage for what will happen in the follow-up film, which was Avengers: Endgame. On the other hand, Endgame was all about concluding the many different plot threads they developed throughout the years in the MCU and ending the conflict with Thanos in an epic manner.

If we focus on those elements, you cannot say that it is fair to judge these two films because they are trying to achieve two very different goals, and the result is quite different. However, what you can do is judge both films by what they are trying to do and determine who was the one who did it better. That is a much better analysis and much more valid to come up with valid criticism.

When we focus on that, it is worth pointing out that Infinity War did it better because they had a much better handle of what they were trying to achieve. As a result, they managed to generate a lot of excitement of not only what was to be Avengers: Endgame, but of probably the biggest asset of that film; Thanos himself.

Thanos was the star of Infinity War and the biggest pull of the movie as he managed only to get people’s attention and impress with his command, prowess, and the fact that he accomplished his goal, which is something that a lot of villains fail to do. We see him getting the Stones through most of the film and going past the Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy as if they were nothing, clearly establishing him as the biggest threat they have ever faced.

More moments than storytelling–the Endgame method.

Avengers: Endgame gave a nice closure to a couple of Marvel characters, such as Iron Man or Captain America, but as a whole, this film felt a lot less compact and practical than Infinity War, mainly because it focused a lot more on moments rather than in a complete and well-balanced story, which is something that should be the primary goal of every single form of storytelling.

This film relies a lot on what came before and tries to work as a tribute to the different films we have seen before in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which is excellent if you are a longtime fan of the franchise. Still, it fails as a story because you are trying to add too many scenes and elements that don’t work as a whole. This is why Endgame is a lot more valued for its moments rather than as a complete film.

Infinity War tends to work a lot better from beginning to end, while Endgame has a lot of periods, especially in the middle section, that doesn’t flow as well as it should. In addition, the first movie tends to have a much darker and serious approach. In contrast, for some weird reason, the second one has way too much emphasis on comedy for what should be a proper sendoff for many different characters and actors in the franchise.

So, Endgame is a movie that generates a lot of emotional reactions from its fans because it is meant to do that. Still, when you analyze it, you can tell that Infinity War is better written, and that is why some moments, like Thor’s arrival to Wakanda, have such a strong reaction –because everything that came before sets up that moment. That’s why we feel so emotional when we see the likes of Spider-Man or Bucky vanishing by Thanos’ snap or when Vision dies at the hands of Wanda, even though it is in vain.

Overall, Avengers: Infinity War is simply much better done and does a much better job of what they have in store. This is not to say that Avengers: Endgame is a bad film, but it simply doesn’t hit the heights that it should have because it relies way too much on fan service instead of telling a coherent story that can get the most out of the characters and the different plot threads that they had to work with.

Both are good films, but Infinity War is better.  Agree or disagree?[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
