Esports is something that most people are now familiar with. It is a competitive sport usually played by two teams through specific video games. There are esports competitions for the most popular multiple games, especially shooters like Overwatch, Rainbow Six Siege, Counter-Strike, and more. MOBA games like LoL and Dota 2 and fighting or sports games like Tekken and FIFA, respectively, are also prominent in the esports scene. There are thousands of pro players, and there are millions of viewers as well. Regardless of its popularity, there is one fiery debate among many familiar with what esports is.
This previously mentioned debate is regarding the title sport, which is given to video game playing on a professional level. Many think that “esports” shouldn’t even be considered a sport, while many believe that it is rightly given the title of a sport. We’re here to discuss this debate today and provide a reasonable answer to why those who think esports should be considered a sport are correct.
The Reason Why Esports Deserves to be Called a Sport
Esports is a sport according to the term of sport. Two separate sides compete against one another to win a match. That’s precisely what sports is all about: competition between two sides. This technically makes it a sport because of the very definition of the word sport. But even delving into details, esports is still very much a sport.
Millions follow esports, and the teams that compete in it like others would participate in sports like football or basketball. These people are also just as passionate about their teams, and the players who play competitively are just as passionate about winning. It takes lots of endurance and skill to play at a level as high as this. Much like a majority of others, esports also revolves heavily around tactics and strategic play.
Taking a look at the debate from the eyes of those who think that it doesn’t deserve to be called a sport, it is understandable why some think so. These people believe that esports isn’t worthy of the sport’s title because of their criticism and physical training. But, this isn’t entirely true at all. They were playing games at a level as high as this requires a lot of taxing training. To prove the point even further, chess is also considered a sport, and it technically doesn’t involve athleticism either.
Long story short, there isn’t any solid reason for anyone not to consider esports as an actual sport. There’s lots of hard work that goes into it, and it can be just as draining as other forms of sport for the players.
