Did the MCU Ruin Spider-Man?

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is loved by millions all around the world. The movies in this universe have made billions for Marvel and Disney and have ruled over the theatrical world for almost a decade now. However, fans are divided over a few different things despite all the love that this universe receives. One of the most popular debates is Tom Holland’s Spider-Man in the MCU and whether or not the character has been ruined because of all the changes that have been made to him.

There will always be some people that have different opinions than others. For example, some people will always believe that the MCU ruined the iconic web-slinger, while some go so far as to say that MCU’s Spider-Man is one of the best iterations of the character in history. Looking from a logical point of view, both of these opinions are somewhat justifiable. However, those that believe that the MCU has ruined Spider-Man sometimes have powerful arguments.

Take, for example, the character and his backstory itself. Uncle Ben, the very reason Spider-Man ever became the iconic superhero he is today, and the man behind the infamous “with great power comes great responsibility” quote is not even mentioned once by MCU’s Peter Parker. There is not a single mention towards him in any scene by Peter or even Aunt May, for that matter. This is something that greatly upset a majority of people, and rightfully so.

Then comes the childish aspect of the character. Spider-Man has never been one to take things too seriously, cracking one-liners and jokes even in the tensest of situations. Even the “more mature” iterations of the character have been childish at times. Still, MCU’s Spider-Man takes this a bit too literally, as Peter Parker is quite literally a teenage child in the universe. Lots of people complain that he idolizes Tony Stark a bit too much in the MCU. He goes so far as not even to make a majority of his gadgets, letting Tony’s Stark Industries take care of that for him. This is another source of disappointment for some fans, along with many others.

But even with all of this said, there is one thing that needs to be kept in mind. The MCU’s Spider-Man is purposefully made out to be this way. There is a high focus on his character development, as seen in Spider-Man: Far from Home. While he may not be the same web-slinger that everyone has come to love, this version of the iconic superhero is apparently on its way to becoming that.

To put it shortly, it is understandable why lots of people believe that the MCU has ruined Spider-Man’s character as a whole. But, the story of this variation of Peter Parker is far from over. The Marvel Cinematic Universe constantly shows the superhero learning more and more while growing into a better and more experienced crime-fighter. The MCU might not have done the best job with him, but it seems the character is improving more and more with each appearance, so there is still a possibility that those who don’t like him will change their minds soon.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
