As a comic book fan, I constantly dream up hypothetical fights, especially Marvel Comics vs. DC. This is part of the charm of the medium and one of the main reasons the fandom is constantly so alive online: because there is always room for a lot of debates and discussions about which character is the best.
This time, I take a fresh look at a battle discussed extensively over the years: Marvel Comics’ The Incredible Hulk against DC Comics’ Solomon Grundy. Both characters stand out due to their freakish levels of strength and power, which is why I have paired them together in a hypothetical battle. Who will win? Let’s find out.
First and foremost, the conditions need to be set so there are no misunderstandings about the rules and the context of that battle. To keep things simple, it will take place in a random wasteland, Dragon Ball Z-style, and the two characters just happen to run into each other.
This will be the classic green Hulk that most comic book fans are familiar with. While Solomon Grundy has had a lot of different interpretations and origins due to DC’s many reboots, his abilities in his current form have remained the same.
Three sections are going to be taken into account: abilities, intelligence, and hand-to-hand combat. The character that wins at least two out of three will win this battle. Now that’s out of the way, let’s begin!
This section will focus on the special powers and abilities these two characters have and how that could play a potential battle between them. In terms of capabilities, how would they use them to come out on top?
Well, it is undeniable that both characters have superhuman strength. However, the Hulk has a lot more feats to his name, and he is usually only defeated by very powerful individuals or through ingenious tactics. Solomon Grundy doesn’t stand out from the latter. Grundy has also been written inconsistently, being able to fight Superman at one point and then lose to the likes of Batman, Green Arrow, and even Bane, all individually.
However, the exciting part is that Solomon Grundy is immortal, which could allow him to play the game long-term in a battle against the Hulk. And while the Hulk has a decisive healing factor that doesn’t compare to being immortal, but is also true that Grundy can still take a lot of damage and be left in a critical state.
When all is said and done, this battle has to go for the Hulk because he has better abilities, especially strength. Grundy could extend the fight for quite some time. However, the Hulk still wins this round.
Intelligence refers to the character’s capacity to develop solutions and strategies during the battle, which could put the score in their favor. And this time around, it is complicated.
Let’s be honest here: neither of these characters is particularly smart. Both of them have made careers in comics primarily due to their superhuman strength and capacity for destruction, so this battle is likely to be an all-out brawl, with them hitting each other as hard as possible.
However, Hulk also has another advantage here: Bruce Banner. This is a factor that can put the Incredible Hulk over Solomon Grundy: the fact that Banner can be the brains in this particular operation.
While it is true that Banner and Hulk have had a lot of periods in the comics where they haven’t gotten along, they have also had a lot of times where they have worked together to stay alive. And in this case, if Hulks feels cornered by Grundy and close to dying, he would accept Banner’s help reluctantly.
Therefore, having the support of one of the greatest minds in the Marvel Universe puts this round in the Hulk’s favor.
This section refers to the character’s ability to fight in a brawl with no special powers or anything of the sort. Who would have superior skills if it was just punching and kicking? Let’s find out.
In general terms, neither Hulk nor Grundy are known for being the most skillful warriors on the battlefield. They rely on their superhuman strength and sheer knack for violence, which is something that, to be fair, has been quite useful for them over the years.
It is hard to pick one in this section. Still, there is a larger sample size for The Hulk due to the many battles the readers have seen him in, which has given people a more significant example of how he fights and how he does things, so that is something that gives him a certain edge over Solomon Grundy.
It is not much, but Hulk also wins here due to having a lot more source material to validate his position as the superior hand-to-hand fighter.
There is an excellent chance that the Incredible Hulk wouldn’t have many problems when facing Solomon Grundy in a battle. He has superior abilities in terms of superhuman strength, has the backing of Banner when push comes to shove, and has a lot more experience in high stake battles.
While Solomon Grundy is certainly no pushover, and he has proven that he can hang with a variety of DC heroes, the reality is that he probably will get SMASHED by the Hulk. Let me know your thoughts.
