No matter how much modern game developers manage to disappoint us with there are broken games, we are still eagerly searching for the next exhilarating adventures that will captivate our imaginations.
We are halfway through 2023 and peer further into the horizon of 2024. Even though the year has been pretty disappointing to gamers with broken game releases such as The Last of Us Part 1, Gollum, and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, many more games remain to look forward to. Developers and studios are hard at work, crafting meticulously detailed universes, refining innovative gameplay mechanics, and pushing the graphical capabilities of modern technology to new heights.
In this article, we embark on a journey through the most anticipated upcoming games set to release in the second half of 2023 and 2024. It is undeniable that Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag is one of the most loved games out there. The sailing and pirating mechanics of the game gave it a fresh and much-needed change. And when Ubisoft first officially announced that they were working on a game inspired by these mechanics, fans went hog wild. Skull and Bones was formally announced way back in 2017 at E3 2017 Ubisoft Press Conference. It was initially planned to release in 2018 but has been on a push-back spree ever since.
Skull and Bones is a tactical action game where players get to live out their fantasy of becoming a pirate by themselves or with a crew of other players. Reportedly, the game has been in development since 2013. The game was initially planned as an expansion to Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, but it was later spun off as an independent project. However, Ubisoft has been kind enough to show us footage of the game as they kept working on it, but it also earned a top spot on the “most delays game ever” list. The current release window for the game is between late 2023 and early 2024. But who knows; after all, it might get delayed again!
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is a well-known video game series, especially among horror game fans. The series’ first game, Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl, came out in 2007 and has been a fan-favorite survival horror game. Two other games have been released after the first Stalker title, but they aren’t exactly sequels to the original. Stalker 2: Heart of Chernobyl, on the other hand, is a sequel to the original game.
After almost four years of drama and scandals, the sequel was revived when the Ukranian developer, G.S.C. Game World, officially announced the development of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2. Finally, in 2021, a full gameplay trailer was shown at the E3 2021 Microsoft/Bethesda press conference. The game finally got a release date of April 2022, which was later pushed back due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The game’s current release window is somewhere in late 2023.
In S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl, you’ll live out a nuclear apocalypse haunted by deformed creatures while surviving in radioactive fields. The upcoming title is built on Unreal Engine 5, making it one of the most anticipated games.
Marvel’s Spider-Man (2018), developed by Insomniac Games, is unquestionably one of the best superhero games ever released. The game featured everything a Spider-Man fan could ask for; an exceptional story, great visuals, intuitive mechanics, a vast open world, and a ton of action. The game even got a remaster alongside a fantastic P.C. port recently; however, what was more exciting than it was the announcement of a sequel.
Spider-Man 2 was officially announced at the PlayStation Showcase event in September 2021, and Sony later confirmed its release date. Spider-Man 2 will come out in late 2023, exclusively on the PS5. You can continue exploring New York City not only as Peter Parker but also as Miles Morales. Additionally, there will be a ton of new mechanics, especially in the combat department, as you, Peter Parker, wear the Venom symbiote suit.
Bethesda is known to be one of the best role-playing game developers out there, and their upcoming most ambitious game is Starfield. Starfield is a sci-fi action role-playing game where you can traverse freely in space. It is a brand-new I.P. by Bethesda and is the first new I.P. developed by Bethesda in over twenty-five years.
If you are a fan of the Mass Effect series, you will love this upcoming, even more ambitious game. In Starfield, you will get to travel to new worlds and solar systems and meet new characters, both human and alien, along the way. The game is directed by Todd Howard and promises to be one of the biggest releases this year. It is planned to release on September 6, 2023. However, looking at how Bethesda’s last major release, Fallout 76, went, should we be skeptical of the game’s upcoming launch, or should we give Mr. Howard the benefit of the doubt?
Now to probably the most anticipated game of all time, Grand Theft Auto 6. G.T.A. is one of the most famous and influential game franchises, but it has been almost ten years since its last main title release. There has been speculation and rumors about the next G.T.A. title, but Rockstar Games remained silent.
They finally broke their silence on February 4, 2022, when they officially announced that the next G.T.A. game was in development. Then went radio silent once again. However, later in the same year, over 50 minutes of work-in-progress game footage were leaked by a hacker, and Rockstar’s parent company, Take-Two, was relatively swift to take down videos showing the leaked footage. This confirmed that the leaked content was, in fact, from the next G.T.A. title, and fans have been more excited about a near release ever since.
Despite the rumors and speculations of an official reveal trailer, the game still hasn’t been revealed. The 10th anniversary of G.T.A. V is also coming later this year; maybe Rockstar plans to announce it then?
