Femme Fatales Unleashed:

The Most Powerful Women in Marvel and DC Comics

Marvel and DC have a plethora of characters, and this is true when it comes to the female side of things as well. Marvel and DC have produced some of the best female comic characters, and some have become icons. In this article, we will examine the best out there in terms of power, abilities, storylines, characterization, and personality. So let’s begin!

Storm (Marvel)

Storm is not only one of the best female characters in all comics but one of the best characters, period. Her development from a naïve girl from Africa in Giant-Size X-Men in the 70s to a confident leader who served as a mentor for her fellow mutants highlights how much of a master Chris Claremont was as a writer.

She has gone through a lot of development over the years. She is arguably the first Marvel female hero that wasn’t tied to a man, unlike Sue Storm (with all the respect she deserves), which was a crucial message in the 70s.

She-Hulk (Marvel)

Bruce Banner’s cousin is known for being the first muscle mommy in fiction and for breaking conventional standards in mainstream comics. Writer John Byrne added elements of comedy and levity during his iconic She-Hulk runs in the 80s and early 90s.

This is prime She-Hulk and why she is one of the all-time greats. Her combination of incredible action with humor (long before Deadpool) makes her stand out from many other characters that might take themselves too seriously. She-Hulk is excellent and underrated.

Barbara Gordon (DC)

She will always be remembered as Batgirl, and rightfully so, as she was a significant character for decades in the Batman mythos. However, there is a lot more depth to Barbara Gordon after the Joker crippled her in Alan Moore’s Killing Joke storyline.

Barbara could no longer be Batgirl, which could have been the end of the journey for her, but she overcame that ordeal and turned into Oracle. This computer expert helped the Batfamily differently. She became a symbol for people that have gone through similar difficulties in real life and an inspiration for them.

Big Barda (DC)

Big Barda is up there in just sheer cool factor, but she also has a lot of substance to her character. She was initially part of Darkseid’s army in Apokolips, serving as a slave to him, but after she fell in love with Mister Miracle, she switched sides to fight the good fight for freedom and justice.

She is a character that symbolizes the best of people in terms of overcoming your own darkness and finding peace and love, which is genuinely represented by her journey with Mister Miracle. They develop one of the best relationships in the history of DC Comics.

Scarlet Witch (Marvel)

Wanda Maximoff may not have the best record as a superhero, and her morals have been occasionally questionable. Still, there is no denying that she is a wonderfully written character with a lot of appeal. Her design, her powers, her backstory, and the borderline insane love she has for her children make her a very poignant character.

The great thing about her character is that she has never been steady or static. She is constantly growing, developing, or changing, which makes her very appealing to many people. She was a villain, and she became an Avenger. She has fought the X-Men, destroyed reality as we know it, and even became a hero again while falling in love with Vision and forming a family.

There is so much when it comes to Scarlet Witch. I could go on forever, but for time’s sake, let’s move on.

Catwoman (DC)

The great selling point of Catwoman is not her sex appeal but her moral flexibility, turning her into someone who can be tridimensional.

Selina Kyle is a character that does things on her own and doesn’t adjust for anyone. Yes, she is often romantically involved with Batman, but that has never stopped her from having her own agency, goals, and viewpoints, making her a very unpredictable and exciting character.

Catwoman is just as capable of siding with the heroes as well as the villains if the right circumstances are met. She has a vast catalog of storylines where she has gone solo, has helped Batman, and has been her foe; tridimensional!

Wonder Woman (DC)

Diana Prince is one of the best comic characters, male or female. There are no two ways about it. She is the most iconic female character in the medium, becoming a cultural icon that has transcended generations.

In terms of her character, Wonder Woman is the best of humanity, even if she is not human. She sees the best in everybody and is always willing to help others and fight the good fight. She can stand alone, being one of the strongest heroes in the DC Universe.

Wonder Woman represents the best a character can be. She has gone through many eras and stints but has always remained determined to do good in the world.

Final Thoughts

So there you have it, the World’s Coolest Nerd’s list of the most iconic female characters in all of comics. The genre would not be the same without these Female Powerhouses. As I stated, there are a plethora of great female characters, so if I missed one of your favorites, educate me in the comments.
